We were thrilled to welcome so many familiar faces to our latest HR Leadership Community event on Thursday 28th November at The Sheepfolds, Sunderland. It was fantastic to reconnect, acknowledge this year’s achievements and begin shaping plans for an even more successful 2025. The relaxed social atmosphere, stunning venue, and incredible grazing board (paired with a few festive drinks!) made the occasion all the more special.

The events we host truly showcase the ongoing evolution of the industry, offering a valuable opportunity to exchange knowledge and inspiration with our peers. As we close out 2024, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on the trends, innovations, and challenges that shaped HR this year.

The integration of AI tools has revolutionised HR processes. From streamlining recruitment and performance management to analysing skill gaps, AI has proven its value. Beyond saving time, these tools are helping to reduce unconscious bias in hiring and supporting smarter, data-driven decision-making.
While AI won’t replace the human side of HR, it’s becoming an essential tool for getting things done more efficiently.

Employee well-being has been a huge focus this year. Companies are introducing tools like fitness trackers and mental health programs to support their teams. Flexible work options, like hybrid schedules and adjustable hours, are now pretty much standard and often valued more than salary from a candidate perspective. This shift is giving people more control over their work-life balance, boosting both happiness and productivity.

As job requirements continue to evolve rapidly, upskilling and reskilling have become more important than ever. Businesses are turning to innovative learning platforms, bite-sized micro-learning modules, and personalised employee development plans to stay ahead of industry changes. This focus on growth has led to a noticeable increase in L&D roles, as organisations prioritise investing in their people. By equipping teams with the tools to adapt and excel, companies are not only addressing current skill gaps but also encouraging a culture of continuous learning.

While there have been many wins, recruitment hasn’t been without its hurdles and it has been a notably challenging year. Here are some of the toughest challenges and how to tackle them:
Lengthy hiring processes remain a significant challenge for many businesses. Research shows nearly half (44%) of businesses fail to respond to candidates within four weeks of receiving an application, which can lead to losing top talent to more responsive competitors. Partnering with specialist recruiters can be a valuable solution, ensuring a smoother, more efficient hiring process while maintaining clear and timely communication with candidates.

Candidates don’t just look at job descriptions—they research online reviews, check out social media, and dive into a company’s culture before deciding to apply. A strong employer brand that genuinely reflects your values and workplace environment is crucial. It helps attract candidates who align with your mission and makes them more likely to stay. On the flip side, if your branding doesn’t match your reality, you could miss out on great hires. A consistent and authentic message about who you are as an employer is essential to standing out in a competitive market.

As Gen Z enters the workforce, they prioritise sustainability, flexibility, and alignment with company values. They actively seek out employers who are committed to environmental responsibility and ethical practices, expecting concrete actions rather than empty promises. Flexibility in work arrangements, such as remote options or flexible hours, is also crucial for this generation, who value a results-driven approach over traditional 9-to-5 schedules. To attract top Gen Z talent, employers must highlight these values in their recruitment strategies, showcasing a commitment to meaningful change and a work culture that aligns with their beliefs.

HR in 2024 has shown it’s no longer just about managing people—it’s about creating spaces where employees and businesses can thrive. We’ve embraced tech and innovation while keeping the focus on meaningful connections and well-being. As we look to 2025, these lessons will continue to guide us in building better workplaces.
